What is Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP)?
Click here for the Child-Parent Psychotherapy Overview document.
Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) is an intervention model for children aged 0-5 who have experienced at least one traumatic event (e.g. maltreatment, the sudden or traumatic death of someone close, a serious accident, sexual abuse, exposure to domestic violence) and/or are experiencing mental health, attachment, and/or behavioral problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The type of trauma experienced and the child's age or developmental stage determine the structure of CPP sessions. For example, with infants, the child is present but treatment focuses on helping the parent to understand how the child's and parent's experience may affect the child's functioning and development. Toddlers and preschoolers are more active participants in treatment, which usually includes play as a vehicle for facilitating communication between the child and parent.

Reflective supervision, reflective consultation, and reflective practice are terms used for the approaches now considered best practices for providers, supervisors, and agencies where stress, secondary trauma, high turnover, and service quality are significant concerns. This interactive virtual training is designed for supervisors in the infant-family early childhood field, including mental health, early childhood education, home visitation, and other child and family services.
-
In this session participants will explore the components of reflective supervision, observe and practice key skills associated with reflective practice and explore strategies for providing responsive versus reactive responses in the supervisory relationship.
-
In these challenging times providing clinical supervision and support to staff is complex, strenuous and essential. The typical model of coming to the supervisor and getting advice on what to do with clients does not adequately meet staff members' needs. Supervisors need a different model that attends, first, to the staff members themselves and then their experiences with clients. They also need to understand clients' experiences as embedded in the larger systems that significantly impact them including race, class, language, and immigration status. This online training is for supervisors who would like to expand their supervision skills to be able to meet these multifaceted needs.

Okla. Dept. of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services is making plans for the coming year and is hoping you will help us in connecting with those who might be interested in training as an ABC parent coach.
ABC is a strengths-based, focused, brief (ten 1-hour sessions) manualized home-visiting program designed to improve attachment and strengthen parent-child relationships. The active ingredient for parent behavior change is “in the moment” comments, which highlight moments during session that parents are engaging in behaviors known to enhance child attachment and regulation. You can learn more about ABC and the science behind it on their website: https://www.abcintervention.org/
What to expect: A screening interview will be scheduled with potential participants once training dates have been confirmed. Following the screening process, those selected to participate will join us for 4 half-days on zoom for the initial training. Following training, parent coaches will participate in two supervision meetings a week (1.5 hours of meetings plus prep time) for 6 months while they see their first three cases, culminating in becoming “certified” as an ABC Parent Coach to practice independently. Potential parent coaches should have access to referrals- which could be any parent, primary caregiver, or legal guardian who has a child between the ages of 6-24 months and has at least 50% custody (we would not do ABC during visitation). Other children or family members are welcome to join sessions as well! We ask that new parent coaches have a few families/referrals in mind prior to the training, so that they can start their first case immediately.
Options: A few training options are available based on the interest and needs of our future parent coaches. Traditionally, parent coaches start their ABC training by learning ABC-Infant designed to support caregivers with children ages 6-24 months. Once a parent coach has learned this version, they can chose to further their training in either the ABC-Early Childhood (2 – 4 years) or ABC-Newborn (0 – 6months).
Training is now being offered that combines certification in both ABC Infant & Early Childhood, which requires an extension of supervision time to a full year. An option allowing parent coaches to train in the Early Childhood adaptation as their first ABC training experience is currently being developed.
Express Interest: We are interested in hearing which of these options might fit best for our potential participants. 1) Training in ABC Infant only, 2) Training in ABC Infant/Early Childhood combined or 3) Training in ABC Early Childhood only.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a parent coach, please contact Audra Haney with your contact information, current practice setting, and the training option you prefer. Once training details have been finalized, someone will be in touch to schedule your pre-screening interview and notify those selected for participation.
